Learn a bit more about us and our approach...

Hello - I'm Martin

Picture of Martin - owner of PA20 Web Solutions

I own and manage PA20 Web Solutions. I've been a computer nerd since my early teens when I was introduced to the Sinclair ZX80, and never looked back! At high school I spent countless hours learning to program the single Apple II until the BBC Micro came along a few years later and the power of networking began to interest me.

At college I progressed onto DEC PDP 11 minicomputers, Sperry Univac mainframes and finally onto Honeywell Bull UNIX servers, working in machine code, various scripting languages and COBOL. When the internet as we now know it fledged in the 90s, I quickly transitioned to HTML and PHP, the backbone of the web today.

Over the years I've worked for a number of companies, from start-ups to multi-nationals, and since 2008 I have been self-employed helping small businesses like yours with their IT requirements whilst acting as IT Director for a new start-up specialising in providing bespoke group educational visits, developing technology to allow schools to mix and match their own packages, choosing accommodation and transport providers, visits and supporting materials to deliver curriculum-relevant learning outside the classroom.

Having been brought up in Ayrshire but moved down south by my parents aged 10, in 2017 I realised a long-held ambition to relocate back to this beautiful part of the world with my own family, and now I am offering my expertise to local firms.

Although settled on the Isle of Bute, I am no stranger to travel and will happily consider commissions from companies in the wider Ayrshire / Inverclyde / Cowal / Kintyre / Argyll area or even further afield.

I hope to be of service to you soon. Whatever your business website needs to get you to the next level, I'm sure I can help. Even if I can't, I probably know someone trustworthy that can!

Google LOVES Content

Google LOVES Content

That's one piece of advice we will gladly give away for free!

If you're going to keep your website ranking well in the search engines against your competitors, then frequently updated, relevant content is a MUST. Engagement from other websites and social media platforms are signals that your website is authoritative and should be promoted above others.

This is why we have partnered with the wonderful Flynn Benson Consulting of Rothesay. Debbie at FB has a first class English Masters and is a superb copy writer and proof reader capable of producing well-written, compelling content on pretty much any subject.

We don't want to be a Jack-of-all-Trades

We tend to focus on the things we're really good at, and we know our weaknesses. Graphic design for example really isn't our strong point!

So, if you need a new logo, a complete rebrand, or print-ready materials to tie in with your website design then we will put you in touch with the remarkable, multi-award winning Brightbulb Design who continually amaze us with the quality of the stuff they churn out.

Jack of all trades

So, How Does It Work?

The Coffee

It's great that you've already identified the need to look at your online presence. It's important that we talk and get to know about your business and its future plans, to learn about the problems and obstacles you are facing, and what you are hoping to achieve. We take the time to understand your requirements fully and ask relevant questions so that the solutions we propose are right for your business. It's also an opportunity for us to set expectations.

The Planning

We'll start by taking a good look at what you already have in place, before identifying what we think you need going forward. This will be wide-ranging and take into account how your website 'flows', the inward and outward links to your social media presence and other related websites such as business directories. This may be an iterative process until we are both agreed on a functional specification - the blueprint for your new website or project.

The Build

Here's where the fun starts! For smaller projects we may well go straight into production if we've already agreed the content, and for larger or complex projects we may produce a series of mock-ups before we invest too much time on the tech stuff - so that you can see what the end result will look like and have the opportunity to make tweaks where necessary. Your project springs to life, with a working system developed in line with the agreed brief.

The Handover

When you are 100% happy with the end result, the project will go "live" - but that's not the end - we will make sure that it is fully functional and delivering what was promised. If you host the website with us or have agreed a care package, we'll be here to answer any questions, apply updates or assist with technical issues that arise. It's important that your website stays ahead of the game, so when necessary changes do come along, we're here to help.

Brand New Website?

When working together for the first time, we start by meeting informally (or formally if you prefer!) and have a good chinwag about your requirements and objectives - even if you're not really sure what you want at that stage! If you already have branding or marketing materials that you wish to incorporate, that will give us a head start on the ideas for initial content.

We'll go away and do any necessary research and then come back to you with a full proposal and some idea of likely cost. If it makes sense to do so, we'll break this down into stages, and identify any optional elements. We'll no doubt go back and forth a few times with tweaks and suggestions (that's par for the course) but ultimately we'll settle on a plan and we'll get cracking.

Depending on the complexity of the project it may well be delivered in stages, but we won't rest until you're happy with the end product.

An expert not only in web design, but an excellent business and seo understanding. Oh, and the patience of a saint.

Website Refresh?

There are an infinite number of permutations when it comes to website refresh projects and we can guide you through this.

One of the most common issues we come across is that over the years a lot of technologies have come and gone or matured. With the best of intentions, young businesses often knock up a DIY website which locks them into an inflexible platform which rapidly becomes unmanageable as the business grows. We can fix this, even if it means recreating your website on a more sustainable, open platform giving you full control over its future and maximum growth possibilities.

The three "biggies" affecting older websites are device interoperability, SSL security and GDPR. Many older websites designed when most people used desktops and laptops are now expected to work on phones, watches, tablets and more. Google now penalises websites that are not "mobile-friendly" as well as sites that do not employ end-to-end encryption ("SSL"). We can help you with that.

GDPR is a new (2018) European law which concerns privacy and data security. This doesn't just affect your website and its associated databases, but all of your business workflows that interact with personal data. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) upholds GDPR in the UK and has the power to levy very large fines for data breaches. When we work on your website, we will offer to update your privacy policy in accordance with GDPR requirements.

These are just examples of common issues we deal with on a regular basis for our clients. Whatever your website needs, give us a call.

Professional Indemnity Insurance

As a responsible service provider, PA20 Web Solutions carries Professional Indemnity Insurance provided by Markel International, regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

This policy covers us for legal costs and you for compensation if we make a mistake when providing professional services, advice or designs. This includes professional negligence, loss of documents or data, unintentional breach of copyright or confidentiality, defamation and libel.

To date we have never made a Professional Indemnity claim, but as someone without prior experience of working with us we hope this gives you a degree of comfort when comparing us with other providers that do not offer this level of protection.
